Josie always liked visiting her grandmother in the countryside. But when her mother loses her job in the city and they’re forced to relocate along with Josie’s sister, Annie, she realizes she doesn’t like the country that much. Especially because Grandma Jeannie has some strange rules: Don’t bring any dolls into the house. And never, ever go near the house in the woods behind their yard. Soon, though, Josie manages to make friendds with the most popular girl in the sixth grade, Vanessa.
When Vanessa eventually invites Josie back to her house to hang out, Hosie doesn’t question it. Not even when Vanessa takes her into the woods, and down an old dirt road, toward the very house Grandma Jeannie had warned her about.
As Josie gets caught up in her illicit friendship with Vanessa, Annie is caught in the crossfire. What follows is a chilling tale of dark magic, friendship, and some very creepy dolls. Verified Purchase. My granddaughter wanted to read this book so badly and so I ordered it for her. She had it read from cover to cover the day it came. She was hesitant to loan the book out to some of her friends because she enjoyed it so very much.
I love to see her read with such vigor and enthusiasm, I read this book also and thought it was well written for her age group. I was very pleased with this book, to see my granddaughter reading and now she watching for the sequel. This book had so much potential. The premise was awesome if a bit overused. However the idea of the grandmother and her rules was enticing. I also enjoyed the character of Vanessa and her dark secret. However, I don’t want to give away the ending the story wraps up way too fast at the end.
As you reach the climax the problem is solved within a page in the story just ends in a picture perfect way. It just felt like a fake out. There was no explanation given for the solution or where the magic even came from. It was a major disappointment. If you like the genre of creepy doll ghost stories, I would try a different book than the collector.
I bought this for my 10 year old daughter. She was very excited to read it after seeing the review in the schoolastic magazine. She said it wasn’t very scary, and she read through the entire book in about 2 hours. She liked it, but it wasn’t a favotite. This is my sons favorite chapter book that he has read so far. He is 10 and looking at different stories other than anything about video games.
He really enjoyed this book. I will be reading it as well over our Christmas break. The Collector is a spine-tingling page Definitely not for the faint of heart or doll collectors. Part mystery, all horror.
One person found this helpful. This author is certainly no Mary Downing Hahn. Truly, the writing and the storytelling skills are so lacking. I would not be surprised to find out it was written by a 3rd or 4th grader. And the ending Alexander needs to rethink their chosen career, or at least start taking writing classes right away before attempting another book.
A mom moves with her two daughters to live with grandmother in the deep woods. The girls, who did not want to go, found quickly that strange things were about to happen.
First of all, there was no wifi!! Grandmother had three rules to follow, and they broke each one. Creepy things happened when they did! Growing up, I had a doll collection, so the cover really got my attention! The author is so descriptive, it was easy to get immersed in the story.
Loved the plot. Great read for all ages. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Bought for 8 year old daughter who hasn’t been much of a reader
