This has happened to me twice now, Any idea what is causing it, so I can stop it happening again? For no apparent reason, all office programs Word, Excel, Outlook have stopped responding, either by ‘hanging’ on the opening splash screen, or by displaying ‘not responding’ on a main screen showing only a skeleton outline. I’ve tried repairing – same symptoms – and reinstalling – still same. I eventually found a solution I have the same problem with Powerpoint also, keep losing information.
Seems to last 40 minutes before it locks up turning screens black. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help. Thanks for your feedback. Have tried both repair options, and a complete reinstall, to no effect.
Will try a scannow later. Choose where you want to search below Search Search the Community. I eventually found a solution:- For each product in turn:- Open in safe mode – still get same symptom. Now open in normal mode – now opens OK! I’d like to stop this happening, as it’s a pain to go through this process each time.

Thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site. Hi John and Susie, This is strange because running in safe mode is not supposed to change anything when you run not in safe mode. An additional step would be to run a scan to find and repair files.
To do that, you would bring up a command prompt window in administrator mode. In Cortana type Command. You will see Command Prompt. Right-click on that and run as Administrator. Then press the Enter key. I hope this information helps.
Please let me know if you have any more questions or require further help. Andre for Directly Independent Advisor.
Which Antivirus utility do you have installed? Have you tried disabling it temporarily to see if they launch without issue? Could you confirm if this also happens in the default Administrator account? Try running the programs again.
In reply to Andre for Directly’s post on September 25, I did try running as administrator right click run as administrator, but I’ll try your method next time to problem occurs.
Antivirus is standard Windows Defender, but I can try disabling. I’m running Windows Insider build latest build , in case that is relevant, but the issue has arisen on the last few builds. I’ve not managed to tie down any trigger for it happening. I was happily using Excel this morning, but later, when I tried to open, the problem had recurred.
Try from the actual built in Administrator Account to isolate if the issue is specific to your user account or the system in general.
Which version of Windows 10 is currently installed? Will try that next time the problem occurs. Ah, you are on an Insider Build. This might actually be a bug. Although I would file it as a bug in Feedback Hub so the engineers know. Have done, thanks.
I didn’t think it likely to be a bug in the Insider build, as Its just one of those things, this could even be a show stopper.
